This was one of the conclusions reached days ago on the course \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain: approach strategy and patients<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d, held in San Lorenzo de El Escorial during the summer courses that counted with the participation of <\/span><b>Juan Antonio Mic\u00ed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of the External Gr\u00fcnenthal Foundation <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cathedra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; University of C\u00e1diz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This two days seminar was organised by the Spanish Society of Pain (SED) in collaboration with the Gr\u00fcmenthal Foundation and it analysed the most relevant <\/span><b>challenges of pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>the patients\u2019 role.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctor Concepci\u00f3n P\u00e9rez, head of the Pain Unit of La Princesa Hospital in Madrid and spokesperson of the SED, reminded that in Spain there are <\/span><b>184 pain units<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in comparison with the 800 hospitals. Which solution did the group raise? To create a high qualified and multidisciplinary reference unit for each million inhabitants with access to complex therapies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A pathology with own name<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are in front of one of the most prevalent pathologies; with a huge social, economic, work, personal and psychological impact: with high expenses and high stress rates. It is a priority in the public health field\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. C\u00e9sar Margarit, from the pain unit of the General Hospital in Alicante, confirmed to sum up the problem of chronic pain in Spain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pathology, that affects to<\/span><b> 20% of the population<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (that is, to eight millions of Spanish people), has been considered a disease in itself since 2010 and its treatment is also stipulated as a human right. This reality evidences the need to create units in charge of the treatment of\u00a0 this pathology. As Concepci\u00f3n P\u00e9rez said, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the challenge is the multidisciplinary approach and to improve the quality of life of patients\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>A precedent in the treatment of chronic pain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A before and after on the fight against chronic pain and a precedent composed by 10 points that are already giving results could be the summary of <\/span><b>El Escorial Statement, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a document created in 2015 with just one goal: to give voice to those who suffer from pain and their relatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Op8uE2n22Rg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than a challenge for the future, the need to increase the number of pain units in Spain has become an objective for the present.
