Another good news for the team of the Observatory of Pain. The famous <\/span>International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health<\/span><\/i> has published our report \u2018Prevalence of Migraine in General Spanish Population; factors related and use of Health Resources’.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out by <\/span>Alejandro Salazar, Laura Berrocal, and Inmaculada Failde<\/b> about <\/span>migraine<\/b>, a neurological disorder considered the second most disabling condition in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In order to know the <\/span>prevalence of this disease<\/b> in the general Spanish adult population, its <\/span>health resources use<\/b> and <\/span>related factors<\/b>, a sample of 23,089 people over 15 years of age was selected from the Spanish Health Survey of 2017 and sociodemographic, clinical and use of health resources data were collected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Risk factors: being a woman, having work stress and poorer mental health\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The study shows that the prevalence of diagnosed migraine in the general Spanish population is <\/span>8.6%<\/b> and almost <\/span>1%<\/b> of the population has undiagnosed migraine. In addition, <\/span>women<\/b> have almost three times more risk of havnig migraine than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It should also be noted that, in patients with diagnosed migraine, the use of health services was <\/span>more common<\/b> than in those without migraine in terms of medical consultations, complementary tests, use of emergency services, and hospital admissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, according to the data obtained, having <\/span>poorer mental health<\/b> and a <\/span>higher level of work stress<\/b> were associated with both diagnosed and undiagnosed migraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Better monitoring and management of the illness is needed<\/b><\/p>\n

The results of the study show that the prevalence of migraine in the general Spanish population is <\/span>high<\/b> as well as that it implies a <\/span>high use of health services<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, better <\/span>monitoring and management <\/b>of the illness and <\/span>control of the most vulnerable people<\/b> seems to be necessary to <\/span>improve the quality of life<\/b> of migraine sufferers and <\/span>to reduce costs<\/b> in the health system.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
