To do this, an exhaustive search of papers published up to November 2021 was carried out in the <\/span><b>PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo and Web of Science<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> databases and <\/span><b>19 scientific papers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were finally selected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2871\" src=\"https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-410x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-410x1024.jpg 410w, https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-120x300.jpg 120w, https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-768x1920.jpg 768w, https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-819x2048.jpg 819w, https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-400x999.jpg 400w, https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP-1200x3000.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/observatoriodeldolor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/INFO-IMAGEN.-Funcio\u0301n-cognitiva-en-pacientes-con-NDP.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the variability of tools, this review shows that the presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is associated with<\/span><b> cognitive impairment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> both in people with DM1 and in those with DM2, both <\/span><b>globally and in specific dimensions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In addition, <\/span><b>depression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also found to be associated with cognitive impairment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the <\/span><b>meta-analysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that individuals with DM2 and diabetic peripheral neuropathy have a <\/span><b>higher cognitive impairment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">than those without diabetic peripheral neuropathy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Diabetes mellitus: a pathology on the rise<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that affects <\/span><b>171 million people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worldwide, having doubled its prevalence in recent years from 4.7% to 8.5%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The relationship between diabetes and cognitive function is complex due to the existence of factors such as high <\/span><b>blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia and obesity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are common in these people and have been shown to be associated with their cognitive performance.
