The Pain Observatory at the Epidemiology Congress

The XLII Annual Meeting of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) and XIC Congresso da Associação Portuguesa de Epidemiologia (APE) was held in Cadiz from 10 to 13 September 2024. In this meeting we have met again with colleagues to share the latest research in Epidemiology, being of special interest to us everything concerning Chronic Pain.

Our colleague Helena de Sola was in charge of providing us with the gender approach in pain research, through her two communications. The first, with the results of the Pain Barometer, in which she showed us the different factors associated with pain according to gender. The differences between men and women were also explored in her second paper, which analysed the consequences of chronic low back pain in the general Spanish population.

María Dueñas went on to present the prevalence of migraine in Spain and differences by sex. In addition, as we are in one of the provincial capitals of Andalusia, it was also considered appropriate to present the results of the Andalusian Pain Barometer, which formed part of María’s second communication.

For his part, Alejandro Salazar spoke about the impact of chronic neck and back pain on patients’ working lives. It affects general health and limitations in daily life more than the pain itself, so a global approach to these aspects is recommended. Alejandro also presented us with the controversy in the literature, noting a decrease in the prevalence of migraine in recent years, while the prevalence of chronic pain is on the rise.

This year we were proud to host this important event in our city. We hope that all the attendees have enjoyed Cadiz and that their stay at the congress has been beneficial for them.
